God Bless Canada
I am pissed off. I just watched Stephen Harper end his platform speech on the National with the words “God Bless Canada”. God Bless Canada? That is a nice kiss to the Socons Stephen, but where the fuck do you think you are anyway, Texas? Newsflash, you are not running for Pope, so stop blessing people! You must really think you have this all sown up if you can start in with that kind of nonsense. You need a humbling, just as much as Paul Martin does. >>>

Canada needs all the help it can get from where-ever it can get it!
As an Atheist conservative I agree, he needs to leave god out of his speaches. But if does invoke god that is fine as long as does not impose his god on the nation. It is clear that he understands the limits of his personal views, and I think he will be agreat choice as PM.
As an Atheist conservative…
I didn’t know there was such a thing as a “believe in nothing conservative”.
I stand corrected.
Perhaps Mr. Harper would be wiser to say “The Maple Leaf forever” in closing a speech/statement.
I think our constitution recognizes the supremacy of God.
Or is that one of the clauses PM wants to remove or protect, can’t remember
Without a “God” we would be a nation of baboon’s.
Where do you think the “moral laws of society” came from? The Liberals? The study of inbred iguanas on an equatorial island? From strict Math and Physics equations?
God forbid (excuse the pun), from the CBC?
While it is your right to not believe in God, reasoning is if you want to live in an atheistic society, why don’t you move to Russia?
Don’t pin man’s screw-ups and religion on God. We messed up, not Him.
So, GOD bless Canada, America, Britain, and any other Christian nation in the world that lets you believe what you want, when you want, and how much you want in a God, or even not to believe.
And GOD forgive people who’s goal it is to destroy the structure of the family, society and moral laws that makes us separate from the primates.
Yes, God bless Canada, because we need it, big time.
cheers

That’s the second plug for Coyne in a week Kate…what gives?
I went back to see if he had changed much but the shine is still off Coyne for me…too elitist and too smug…I expect this from a TO MSM denizen.
Perhaps he should close speaches with an invocation for blessings from the great earth godess so the Pagan hordes don’t burn their first born in protest 😉
I don’t care – I just love the running Hindenburg gag.
I was dozing while watching the news last night and so I thought I might have been dreaming when I heard Mr. Harper end his speech with “G-d bless Canada”. That sounded so wonderful – yes as Tom said above, without our Judeo-Christian heritage we would not have a country like Canada (and the USA, Australia, Britain). Yesterday morning I heard Mr. Harper say he would re-open discussion on missile defense and withdraw Canada from the Kyoto accords. Maybe, just maybe, Canada is going to grow up out of its aging hippie anything-goes-if-it-feels-good mentality.
God Bless Steven Harper!
God Bless Kate!
The last time I checked ‘God’ was not a registered voter.
God bless Stephen Harper. This country began with prayers for God’s blessing and continued so until recent days. Canada has received more than its share of blessings and it won’t do harm to anyone else’s faith – even the athiest’s – to ask Him to continue to bless us.
Harper is who he is – which is more than could be said for the chameleon Martin.
to Tomax7:
I think you are off-base critisizing the athiest poster above. The fact that you mention that Canada is a country that allows freedom to chose what we believe in and et al, you are making that ‘freedom’ quantifiable by suggesting we are all free to believe……just as long as we believe what you do.
Look – I’m an atheist; I don’t believe in an ‘intelligent designer’ though I do believe in a self-organizing logical design (don’t worry, I won’t get into that).
But, I think Stephen Harper’s statement of ‘God Bless Canada’ is/was excellent. I mean that. Why? Because, to me, it shows humility; it’s a statement that says “I’m only a man; there’s more to life than human thought’.
Now- whether you consider this ‘more to life than humans’…as God or logic or whatever – I’m not involved in. But, it was that acknowledgement of ‘more to life than Me’..that was so great.
I hope he repeats and repeats it.
God keep our land, glorious and free!
He’s speaking from the heart. Leave him alone. Much better than Maurice Strong, Bless Canada, isn’t it?
Once again, Ive pulled something out of Tony Bourdains Les Halles Cookbook, and changed it up a bit. The recipe started out as Onglet Gascon. However, the bone marrow didnt turn out. Also, I figure why use half a cup of white wine and reduce it by half, if you can instead use a cup of dry sherry and reduce it by three-quarters. That, and you just cant get onglets on short notice in this town, so I went with sirloin steaks, instead.
” . . . too elitist and too smug . . .”? Man, you’ve never read George Will, have you? Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have something to say. Coyne’s usually right, except when he’s wrong, and then he’s really wrong. (Unlike, say, Mark Steyn, who is never wrong.)
P.S. and Kate’s right, the Hindenburg meme is great. Just have to say it again: Oh, the humanity!!!
As one of the Pagan Masses you speak of, WL MacKenzie, I did’t hear him use the specific name of any particular god, least not one I would commonly object to in this context. 😉 Seriously though, pagans heathens or whatever you may want to call us are at core poly- theistic, which by logical extension means we must be tolerant of other God’s and goddesses than our own lest we also offend our own. It is no coincidence that western democracy is born of two pagan wombs Greece and Iceland, so worship whatever deities you wish, invoke whatever Deities you wish as well, just don’t be upset when I do the same. Thor friend to humanity bless the CPC with your strength, Odin bless them with your wisdom and foresight, Tyr grant Stephen Harper the strength of your sword arm of justice that he may clearly see where in law he may proceed against the oath-breaking liberal party. Loki spread your cleansing flames of chaos among the ranks of the Liberals, that they may burn away the useless worthless trollmounted worms leaving behind only that which is worthy, let your actions be swift in coming and equalise the fabric of Wyrd. I pray this before all you great Gods Heroes and wights of the land, hear my prayer.

re”God Bless Canada”
What is God? …different meaning to different people/churces/philosophies. To take offence is stupid and intolerant.
To Artic front:
Read between the lines…it is because the very nature of God (or G-d for our Judeo friends), that we have this freedom – to believe or not.
I am getting tired of listening to whining airheads getting so bent out of shape because someone is willing to publically state a belief in God.
You don’t believe in God, fine, that’s your business, but don’t yap when I say I do or that I am accountable to Someone other than myself.
Don’t take this personally, but…
Boo Hoo.
Stephen’s been using “God Bless Canada” to close his speeches for as long as I can remember. It’s not a new thing, but it’s incredibly refreshing to hear.
I tired of people not being allowed to say what they believe in, lest they offend some over-sensitive crybaby.
I = I’m
The reason I object to Harper’s using “God bless Canada” as a closing to his speech is because I believe strongly in the separation of religion and politics. Political decisions must not be made because of a politician’s personal religious beliefs. These decisions must be such that they are palatable to our citizens of different religious backgrounds.
It’s one thing for somebody off the street to say God Bless you or God Bless Canada.
It’s a whole other story for someone who is try to represent a ever diversifying country to say it.
I am far from Liberal or Politicly correct but when you speak for a nation it’s a different story you have to watch what you say.
I’ve voted P.C. as long as I could and Harper scares the pooh outta me. I have followed him for him since his days as a reformer and if he is not willing to confront the types of things he has said in the past head on about Gays, womens rights, language rights, individuals rights there is a very serious problem. People can change sure but it’s hard to belive someones changed when they won’t admit they were wrong in the first place and still want free votes on gay marriage and will only rule out abortion legislation for this term.
