Gun crime is up in Toronto. Criminals using unregistered handguns have been shooting people, mostly each other.
There’s an election on, so it’s time to look tough. But criminals are hard to find, and they fight back.
Still, Paul Martin wants to be seen as doing something. How about all those law-abiding citizens who followed the law and registered their handguns?
They’re probably going to vote Conservative anyway.
Let’s punish them.

Will this Canadian Olympic gold medal (won by a woman) ever be repeatable with the handgun “ban”?
‘Ottawa’s Linda Thom has been dubbed the “pistol-packing mama.” Thom earns this nickname following her stunning gold-medal performance in the sport pistol event at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The 41-year-old mother of two shot an astounding 297 out of 300, deftly defeating her American counterpart Ruby Fox.’

Martin, you take away my handgun and I’ll use my voting privileges to take away your position in government.
Just like the Liberals to do something stupid. Hey, what about the Conservatives? I thought they were supposed to severely limit my freedoms?? Looks like the Liberals are taking the “hidden agenda” low road.
PS. Why not ban hip-hop, rap, old skool and urban music while you are at it. They are causing much more damage to your commuist society then handguns are.
So now the unregistered, illegal handguns used by gangs in Toronto will be what? . . . .double illegal? If illegal handguns were the problem in the first place, how is making them more illegal going to deal with the situation? What about enforcing the laws we already have? What about dealing with the issues of gangs and drugs?
This is just a silly idea. Am I the only one who sees this glaring inconsistency?
Maybe there can be new Linda Thoms after all. From the Liberal Party press release:
“Legitimate target shooters who meet requirements would be eligible for an exemption to the handgun ban.”
http://www.liberal.ca/news_e.aspx?id=1141
It doesn’t say that there cannot be new legitimate target shooters who can then buy new handguns. Is there to be a concomitant ban on new people becoming target shooters?
What does the ban achieve, as a great proportion of the legally-registered handguns are in the hands of target shooters who can keep them, and it would seem that more such guns will still be legal?
The Liberal press release also states:
“Banning handguns through an amendment to the criminal code that would invite provinces and territories to participate to make the ban national; an amnesty and buy-back program to collect existing handguns; and a national Gunstoppers Program to provide financial rewards for information leading to removing an illegal gun from the street.”
So in fact there will be no national ban. Provinces will only be “invited” to participate. So let’s have a patchwork with legal handguns in New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Alberta (for example) and not elsewhere.
This truly is ill-thought-out nonsense addressing a non-existent problem (legally owned and registered handguns)–while those extra border guards, who are supposed to help stop gun smuggling, will themselves remain unarmed.

Last leader to confiscate guns from all citizens…Aldolf Hitler.
who gives a flying crap about sport shooting… there’s a much deeper issue here. the red liberals taking away your freedom to choose once again… taking away options and deterrents to defend your LIFE against attackers. removing yet another measure from law abiding citizens that criminals WILL have should they decided at their WHIM to prey upon you. I hope this makes flaccid toronto happy… the police can come and pick up your cold dead corpse after the fact at least because they won’t be able to save you while you’re looking down the barrel of an unregistered handgun while you stand there unable to protect yourself and your family… very comforting…
this communist epiphany by Martin is truly SCARY!!! if you buy this BS again Tornoto you suck you pathetic little sheep.
Just punish the CRIMINALS who attack people you naval gazing liberal idiots and quit trying to take away the few essential freedoms we have left! Justice and Liberty from dictatorial smoke and mirror tyranny for all.
Maybe someone should examine the crime stats from Australia and U.K., after they banned guns. The criminals kept theirs and assaults, robbery, and killings dramatically escalated. When some people legally have guns, and use them responsibly, criminals don’t know which house has them and which does not. They are more cautious – when they know the poulation is unarmed they have no fear.
Thanks Paul Martin. You just made my decision of whom to vote for real easy. It’s the Conservatives.
Of all the stupid things to come up with. After the gun control fiasco, how much is it going to cost to collect all the hand guns owned by law abiding citizens (and the criminals).
Martin, for once please come up with something that will be good for Canada and its citizens instead of trying to simply buy votes.
The timing of the announcement to ban hand guns was questionable too.
Mike
“Last leader to confiscate guns from all citizens…Aldolf Hitler.”
Oh good, the Nazi link. and so soon, too. Congratulations, Durward (the litle “Aldolf” fart notwithstanding.)
Nice to see the right maintaining its penchant for truly rational discussion of an issue.
Martin’s plan for phase II of the election: ban all bullets.
What a maroon.
The only redeeming quality of the Liberal Gun Plan is the increased sentences for possession of illegal handguns–which was stolen and watered down from the Conservative platform.
So Mr. Martin thinks that guns are evil and that collectors shouldn’t have them, and hinted that those that belong to gun clubs are going to find things a lot more difficult. So basically bad guys still have illegal guns (thanks for banning illegal guns ya genious).
If guns are so evil, then perhaps Mr. Martin should shut down this Toronto manufacturer of guns and tell all of the folks there to find a new job and don’t worry about the revenues it generates…how could we possible export something that is so vile?
Perhaps he should tell these folks to stay home from the Olympics while he is at. If guns are that vile why would we want to use them on the international stage.
“Last leader to confiscate guns from all citizens…Aldolf Hitler.”
I believe it is Tony Blair.
“Oh good, the Nazi link.”
MisterHitler don’t get your knickers in a twist. It’s really a link to a good old Social Democrat.
Did it work?
The crime rate in Britain is sky rocketing.
Where to begin with this latest announcment from the Liberals. Is there a person in this country who would dare to declare their imbecility by voting for any Liberal running for office. Do the ROC now realize that for the past number of years (decades?) we have been governed by the so-called Liberal intelligencia. This is the group that gave us the pirouetting fuddle-duddle, the ‘just-so(I stay in power)ciety, the ‘I-didn’t-have-a-choice’ gambit, the ‘da proof is da proof’ plea. Now they are attempting to foist the ‘King Canute’ replica on us. There is a better chance of joining the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean with a canal system than there is of stopping illegal gun traffic across the border from the U.S. Anyone who votes for this Liberal platform should remove themselves to Bedlam voluntarily because the ROC believes there is a better future for this country under a realistic party.
Here’s an interesting phenomenon. Below are comments to the Toronto Star regarding the gun ban. Most seem to realize that it is really an admission on the part of the Liberals that their $2 billion gun registry is a failure. I was surprised by the cynicism expressed by these readers – I’d expect Toronto Star readers to be all for Paul Martins gun ban. Here are the respondents:
Voices: Handgun ban
Dec. 8, 2005. 11:15 AM
What is more effective in fighting gun crimes: a handgun ban, tougher sentences or adding more police?
Rules! Who is going to enforce them? No one is enforcing the rules/laws we have. Why waste more and more money on passing laws?
Clara Sheffe, Toronto, Dec. 8
I believe tougher sentences would be the most effective way (of the three options) to go, but also feel that more police in certain areas would no doubt contribute positive results. A ban on any firearms is totally wrong. At present even with existing gun control laws the only people who own handguns (except for a small few collectors, etc.) are the bad guys and you can bet their guns are not registered.
Bill Rhude, Hopewell, Dec. 8
Outlawing handguns is a good start. These are weapons of personal destruction. However, a ban will never stop a criminal who is intent is to get one.
Scott Delaney, Toronto, Dec. 8
Typical. Another gun control, just what we need. Their first gun-control legislation was a farce. We have a handgun registry and have had one for years. This plan will not stop or get handguns off the street. What is needed is tougher legislation for people caught with handguns: Five years for carrying a gun, 10 years for having a gun during a crime and 15 years for using a gun during a crime.
George Pengilley, Brampton, Dec. 8
Guns do not commit crimes. Criminals commit crimes and they are the problem. Deal with the problem!
Colin Wardley, Oro Station, Dec. 8
But dont we have a billion-dollar gun registry so we can easily catch people who commit gun crimes? Is Paul Martin saying that the billion-dollar gun registry isnt working? How can that be? Banning handguns will do nothing to get the unregistered guns off the streets.
Jennifer Stanley, Hamilton, Dec. 8
Gun control is nothing but a Band-Aid solution to repair the mental scars created by handgun violence.
Richard Stevens, Toronto, Dec. 8
I think that both a ban on handguns and tougher sentences combined would be an effective combination.
Michelle Daigle, Toronto, Dec. 8
I think that imposing a handgun ban is admitting, without remembering, the failure of the $2 billion gun registry.
Chris Caldwell, Toronto, Dec. 8
What would banning handguns do? Most of the crimes are being committed by thugs using illegal weapons … I believe tougher sentences are the way to go.
Bruce Sawdon, Barrie, Dec. 8
I think a ban on handguns would help. There is certainly no valid reason for their existence. However, that law would not deter gangster types for a minute. We need to fundamentally change our social fabric to make gang activity less attractive, especially to young people.
Tom Nichol, Toronto, Dec. 8
Martin already knows he doesn’t have your vote. He wants to get the NDP votes.
So now the unregistered, illegal handguns used by gangs in Toronto will be what? . . . .double illegal?
Hardly. It’s the difference between cracking down on gun crime and firearms violations, and enacting a useless policy to placate the soccer mums and faculty lounge fascists. The former ends up in cries of “racism!” and hurts the Lib voting base, whereas the latter only affects/angers folks who would never vote Lib in the first place, and shores up a few of the flakier borderline voters.
Also, cracking down on gun crimes would probably affect the ability of many key Lib voting blocs to earn a living…heh!
Registration, inspection, mandatory education courses and renewal of certificates for eternity, all at the combined cost of more than the value of all the guns in Canada, was about all I could stand.
Gun homicide was not slowed an iota , not one bullet stopped by the nannystate.
Come and get them!
I double dog dare you.
This hand gun ban is of course a joke. But the whole issue of gun control is to disarm the citizenry. Nothing more. Nothing less.
You can talk about health care being a big issue. And it is. But individual freedom and a strong Canada are just as important for many of us. There are enough of us who believe this that we can and will return to Alberta and swing the vote, which is now close anyway, over to separation in the next provincial election if that’s the only way to save Canada. There is more to Canada than Ottawa and Ontario.
Look for a flood of people who love Canada as it used to be to return to Alberta if the CPC either:
1) does not win,
2) wins with a minority government that is powerless to act on their platform, or
3) loses to a Liberal majority or minority.
I for one will not sit idly by any longer while my country is being destroyed. There are many more like me in Canada. We may not be enough to swing a vote Canada wide. But we sure can control one province. I believe that this election is the last chance to save Canada.
There may be hope for this country yet. Aside from the Toronto Star reader comments above, check out the CBC webpage comments!

AND NOW, GUNS
Look, I am not a fan of handguns, but I think we’re past the stage where we as a society can seriously argue that by addressing the availability of these weapons we can curb criminal behavior. So, to argue for…
It has come to my attention that Prime Minister Martin has announced a plan to ban handguns. This provides me with even more proof that the liberal party has no respect for the rights of law abiding citizens. The recently announced Liberal Handgun Ban is an attack on the rights and traditions of all Canadians and is designed to distract voters from the latest scandal regarding insider trading.
The idea of a national handgun ban is taken from the prewar politics of 1930’s Germany. I wonder if Prime Minister Martin should give us all a date as to when the Wehrmacht will come around and take away our private property.
Anyone who has watched the whole gun-control beast grow knew this was coming, no surprise. The most insidious thing is the state paying people to rat out their neighbors who have an “illegal” gun. Exactly like Stalinist Russia, when neighbors and family members were rewarded for reporting unSoviet activities. Gang members won’t squeal on each other, they are already criminals.
Canadians have to come to their senses soon, or we’ll be fomenting revolution around a flickering candle, and ruminating about what freedom used to be like. Sadly, it may already be too late for the survival of freedom in this country.
Unless we can change the course of this “Titanic” soon, we’re in trouble as a society. Can you feel the cold chill from the iceberg in the air?
I do…
Geez, I hope PMPM passes a law, after banning all hand guns, demanding all criminals be more polite towards their defenceless victims while robbing, mugging, raping them etc, it would lessen the trauma of having an illegal hand gun being waved in your face.
“I double dog dare you.”
Now THERE’S someone who watches the fabulous “A Christmas Story” each year.
You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead fingers! “I double dog dare you.”
MEMO; To Canadian Criminals involved with Handguns
RE: Handgun Ban
From: Dean Wormer
As of today, please be advised that Dean Wormer has placed you all on DOUBLE-SECRET PROBATION.
I realise that the guns previously used in the commitment of your crime were illegal, plaese be aware that they are soon to be really, really illegal and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law (ie. Curfew is now 10PM instead of 11PM).
Signed,
Dean Wormer (AKA PMPM)
To carry this a little bit farther, and in the words of Senator Blutarski:
Wormer (Martin) GONE
Neidermayer (Brison) GONE
Greggy (Stronach) GONE.
Ken
Dithers claimed during today’s announcement of this confiscatory abortion that at least 50% of illegal handguns are stolen from legitimate owners.
Does anybody have reliably-sourced facts/figures on this? It seems awfully high, considering the influx of guns from the US.
Natch, PM lamebrain took the position that our border guards would continue to remain unarmed, doubtless to improve their track record at confiscating illegal arms from the US.
My best (and only) laugh of the day, though: I was really hot about this in the a.m., & told a friend that this was fascism, plain & simple.
His reply? “Well, no. It’s worse than fascism, At least in a fascist state they’ll confiscate your guns AND keep the criminals in jail…”
Laugh through the tears.
Hey, Alberta! How’s the job situation for Professional Engineers (Mechanical) with about 20 years manufacturing experience? Thinking Ontario just ain’t cutting it anymore…
sjd(at)cogeco(d0t)ca
Thanks for the laugh, Ken.
I was thinking about “double-secret probation” this morning, but I couldn’t remember which movie it was in.
I can only laugh while I cry. At least in the US when the govt. registers firearms – and we all know confication is soon to follow – the govt.has the decency to wait until all the guns are registered BEFORE the confication starts. Up north has found a quick short cut….too bad all that TAX money was spent on registeration 1st!
SJD,
Job prospects are very good for engineers. Being Mechanical probably a little better in Edmonton than here in Calgary (greater predominance of Chemical due to Petroleum) but near zero unemployment.
No sales tax, flat rate of 10% income tax and as I said near zero unemployment, Capitalist pigs.
SJD, Come on down.

CP: Dec. 9…
A source inside the Liberal Party and close to the Prime Minister has leaked news that tomorrow Paul Martin will announce a ban on all deseases in Canada.
It is believed among Liberal strategists that such a ban will save Canadians literally hundreds of billions of dollars in healthcare costs, and thus allow a Liberal government to spend that money on more important things…like, f’rinstance, sending a rocket ship to the planet Zork in search of an intelligent life form, the theory being that surely to God there must be at least one example of this somewhere in this universe.
Liberals believe that obviously not too swift voters…evidenced by the fact that Liberals, despite being nailed for stealing millions of dollars, still lead in polling…, will be thrilled with such an initiative, particularly those in the GTA.
Developing…
Liberals during campaign for support for C-68:
“Trust us! We don’t want your guns!”
All those firearms owners who believed this line of crap, please raise your hands.
I thought so.
Everyone else who believed this line of crap, please raise your hands.
Other than from the GTA, I mean…
Right.
All those who plan nevertheless to vote for these theiving liars anyway?
Figures.
*sigh*
Only in Canada.
I thought handguns were banned anyway, with the exception of collectors? No, Torontonians, that isn’t a Chinook blowing down the Jane-Finch corridor. It’s hot air and more brain farts from PMPM. God this guy is an embarrassment. WOnder if he’s being set up by his party to look like an ass everytime he opens his mouth?
Obviously, Paul Martini just doesn’t get it. He and his Libranos now want to spend a couple of billion dollars on handguns. Didn’t we just get those registered? God knows how much that cost. Maybe if they’d done it right in the first place, they wouldn’t have to revisit this issue. Maybe we should be calling for “warrenty work” on this little project.

I agree with the handgun ban on one condition. For every handgun that is confiscated, we get to shoot one Liberal politician. I mean, fair is fair right?
Gee, Liberal immigration policy creates violence in Toronto, so the solution is…bring in gun legislation that covers the rest of the country too. And if Liberal yuppies in Toronto want their kids to be raised in unionized government facilities, get rural folks, and people from small towns who’ll never even see one of the government kiddie-barns to pay for it all.
You’d almost think that whoever wins Ontario gets to rule the country. Strange.
Yep!
Liberals are bullies and cowards along with being incompetent and dishonest and lets not forget hypocrites!
Bullies always pick on the easy mark ( that would be law abiding citizens here!)
Cowards will never face up to real problems!
Incompetents never get anything right!
Dishonest ones lie about whatever they think they can get away with!
Hypocrites would tell you how to live but not live as you must unser their rules!
Did you knoiw that PMartin had ARMED protection with him as he made his presentation in Toronto’s Jane & Finch community? Oh yeah and they forced local residents to stay outside so they had the hall packed with their supporters and friendly press!
LOve that reference to Animal House!
Thanks Ken!
The should regiester PAUL MARTIN register him into the nearist house of stupdidy and just think while we are getting more guns and our crime rate is going down they ban gun and the crime rate gose up and the same for england and now CANADUH wants the make it a world wide gun ban with the help of the socialist UN
When I asked a friend of mine this afternoon what she thought of the handgun ban, she came back with the best answer I’ve heard.
“When Paul M comes west to campaign, I hope he gets attacked by a rabid skunk. Then has a farmer hand him a handgun minus the bullets and tell’s him to protect himself”.
“If he kills that skunk by beating it to death with the gun, lets charge him with “cruelty to Animals”.
The inbreeding of the liberals, has shone through, just brilliantely today. A few more days like today and the consevatives will have a lock on the this election.
Now that the Liberal government, making its mark of leadership in the world, is going to take the means of defending oneself away from the law-abiding citizens with the confiscation of all handguns, I hope the Prime Minister will be conciderate enough to do something for all the victims, while making it easier for the criminal,… For Example… The criminals should forced by Canadian Liberal legislation to allow the victim at least one phone call before they are raped, robbed, or shot, after all, the victims should have some concideration too. Only in Canada eh.
Judgeing from lieberal health care wait times, there will be “guaranteed wait times” for child care spaces in the new fed system of at least 16 years…. So once the children grow up they will be inducted into the child care system where they can be hired to teach themselves.
Genious !
Dateline January 24, 2006
After winning an unprecedented fifth term in office, albeit a minority one, the Liberal leader, PM Paul Martin with his acting Deputy vice-PM(Dawg) Jack Layton jointly announced they will be leading the first confiscation raids of legaly registered hand-guns in downtown Toronto. Meanwhile in an unrelated incident barricades have appeared across the Trans-Canada Highway 60 miles east of Winnipeg.
Who’d have thought.
My wife is a smart lady and she feels this “ban” is no more than a cynical attempt to get the urban female vote. I think the ladies are way too smart to be fooled on this one. Having said that let’s ban:
– politicians who don’t keep election promises
– politicians who stonewall and/or refuse to be accountable
– politicians who interfere with bureaucrats doing their jobs (je me souviens “le Shawinigate et le banque devellopment du Canada” (excuse my French!)
– politicians who think they are “entitled to their entitlements.”
Hope that doesn’t mean we have to ban all politicians.
Bullet, I like the way your friend thinks. Would you elect someone who says “I want to fix the hand gun problem too and it will only cost the same amount that was spent just on gun registration. I will use a quarter of it to buy and give (FREE) everyone (good, bad and ugly) a handgun. I will use the other quarter to “fix” all the social ills that come from handgun ownership. The other half I keep for “administrative expenses” and to rid the country of rabid skunks!
