All you have to do is read the Careers section in any newspaper and see the statement about “employment equity” in government jobs listed. Do they even realize their own hypocrisy?

Regarding the National Post story, some bloggers were blogging about the GoC’s flat out racist and sexist hiring policies months ago and took an insane amount of heat over it.
While it’s good to see this story getting play , the fact of the matter is that the feds have had hardcore racist and sexist policies for quite some time.
I suspect the bloggers who were fighting this sorta crap months before The CanWest Corporation deemed it cool to do so are not terribly impressed with the folks who speaks out about this sort of thing only after given the cue to do so by the CanWest corporation.

Ignorance of the situation is neither plausible nor excusable.

I saw a TV ad a while back — I think it was for McCains — which showed a husband and wife lying side by side in bed; the wife, who was pregnant, asked her husband to get her something from the kitchen. When her husband didn’t respond properly, she reached under the blankets and did something forceful to his, er, privates, which caused him to sit instantly upright with a rictus of pain and surprise on his face. The ad froze that image for a moment, before dutiful husband obeyed his wife’s request. It was clear that the ad intended to be humorous. But I’m guessing that if it showed a husband doing that to his wife, it wouldn’t just be “not funny”, it would be, um…

At this point in the absence of a credible explanation of fuzzy terms like “celebrate diversity” it may be safe to assume they mean “formalized race and gender discrimination policies”.
It is difficult in fact to find many corporations in Canada which DON’T have this formalized race and gender discrimination. Maybe it is so they can do government business, maybe they caved in to shakedown racket interest groups, I dunno. But it stinks.
As I noted on my world famous blog, the fact that Public Works can afford to eliminate most of the workforce from their hiring plans would seem to indicate that the jobs they are hiring for aren’t that important.
That being the case, wouldn’t a hiring freeze and the selective firing of able bodied white males be a better way to get their numbers up?

When I trained to be a Probation Officer in BC, about 10 years ago, the instructors (one an Oriental male, the two others white females) told us in no uncertain terms, “this is a great career if you’re a woman or a minority, but if you’re a white male, you can pretty much forget about advancement”.
The reason I used quotation marks is that they ARE quotes; those words were indelibly burned onto my mind, shocking as they were to me at the time. The really upsetting thing is how many people accept this kind of stuff, even (perhaps especially) in polite company.
Oh, by the way, our ‘graduating class’ included one native woman who, unlike the rest of us who had bachelor’s and master’s degrees, had not passed graduated from high school (she might have gotten her GED, mind you).
She flunked the Written Composition component of the course 3 times. Somewhat problematic, considering that written reports to Court are a major part of that job! Nonetheless, she was granted a special exemption and was subsequently given work as a PO.
Government racist hiring practices are not new. In the 80’s I asked the mounties for an application. They refused me because I was a white male. They said they were only allowed to give them out to women, visible minorities and the french. I asked by french you meant bilingual? They said no. A Quebecer with no English could get an application. As anyone in the military, or government ranks know the french are hardly treated badly. They get promoted etc… much faster.
Perhaps the best thing to do is take away the vote from men for the next 200 years, not allow any of us to work at all, and try to make up for the injustices that have been purpetrated for the last 2+ millenia (you should be reading the sarcasm between the lines).

Government racist hiring practices are not new. In the 80’s I asked the mounties for an application. They refused me because I was a white male. They said they were only allowed to give them out to women, visible minorities and the french. I asked by french you meant bilingual? They said no. A Quebecer with no English could get an application. As anyone in the military, or government ranks know the french are hardly treated badly. They get promoted etc… much faster.
Perhaps the best thing to do is take away the vote from men for the next 200 years, not allow any of us to work at all, and try to make up for the injustices that have been purpetrated for the last 2+ millenia (you should be reading the sarcasm between the lines).
