Opposition Liberals blamed the booming Alberta economy for the problem.
As we are so often reminded, there is no statistical correlation between poverty and drug abuse.
If I were a teenager in this country, today,
I would probably be on drugs, myself. (That would give the incompetent crooks in the liberal party an excuse to hire more flunkies to look after me.)
And then, the flunkies could vote for the dipwads who hired them. It’s the Canadian way.
This is the first time I’ve ever heard drug abuse being blamed on a booming economy. The Liberals really are morons. If you want to point the finger, try blaming the federal government’s soft stance on drugs. They even want to legalize Marjuana(the gateway drug). This is not a problem exclusive to Calgary either. The Liberals should take a visit to Vancouver’s lower eastside if they want to see how bad this problem can get. Newfoundland is currently in a crisis with a drug called oxycontin. The kids don’t have disposable income, so they resort to armed robberies.There has been a huge spike in such instances in the last 2 years. As for Crystal Meth, this can be linked to the Albertan economy, because most of the chemicals needed to manufacture it are found on farms.Hey Taft, this could actually be good for your popularity, because an Albertan would have to be on drugs to vote you. MORONS!!!

A case can be made that at both extremes drug abuse will increase.
In the case of poverty, the lack of money and work leads to despair and a loss of dignity and worth. Drugs offer an ‘out’ from hopelessness — though, perversely, only adding to the downward spiral.
In the case of great wealth, the lack of a need for money or work can also be debilitating. Note that the article talks about teenagers, not adults. I would guess that these teens are the children of adults who have good paying jobs. The parents then lavish on their children the fruit of their labours, showering them with ‘things’.
Trouble is, accumulating things is not necessarily life-fulfilling or life-affirming, especially if they have not been worked for or earned. For teens who are at that stage in life where they are trying to figure out who they are and what they’ll be, easy luxury can also lead to a loss of dignity or worth. Drugs again offer an alternative, and wealth makes them easier to acquire.
However, a booming economy is not to be blamed in this case. I believe that the responsibility lies more with the parents and our society.
Accumulating wealth, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. Often it is the reward for hard work, diligence, expertise, and yes sometimes just plain dumb luck. But if accumulating wealth (or things) is a person’s core foundational value, that reflects, I believe, an emptiness of the soul and a poverty of self-worth and dignity. In such a life, drugs can become enticing when ‘things’ fail to fulfill.

Martin is basing his election campaign on the Liberals building a strong Canadian economy. So I guess the Liberals in Alberta will blame him for the surge in drug abuse. I think not.
Actually, I understand from friends who work in the oil patch in Alta / Sask. that part of the drug problem arises from all the vultures who come to prey on workers, especially young workers, who are making a lot of money, before they know how to manage it well.
On a somewhat related topic, comments from a HR person in one oil patch company indicate that while she can orient say 20 people for these high paying jobs, sometimes only 1 of the 20 show up to start the job, after they find out how hard the work is……all of which prompts me to think “so there are lots of young workers who are too lazy and soft to do what it takes to make a crapload of money???” They could easily finance a university education in these jobs. I shake my head!
The Street Drug problem is an imported problem. I have a good friend who is involved in the operation of “the mustard seed” drop in center and he says that most of the drug addicted homeless kids they help are runaways from the northern reserves or from Vancouver, Toronto or other metro areas….the hope is that Calgary’s boom will produce enough lucrative petty crime or welfare to support their habit.
Free meth clinics means we can expect a boom in the number of junkies cluttering up the city core…and we will have the exact problem Vancouver had/has.
I hope Calgary home owners remember this when their property taxes are increased and their quality of life decreases as drug addict crime/disease/culture increases to take over the city core at night and spreads to the adjacent suburbs. When I was in Bankview/Marda Loop, it was common to see junked up druggies from the core walking around looking for handouts…the B&E rate in the are started going through the roof so I moved out to a community further from the city core.
Drug addicts are bad news….an influx of them produces a wave of petty crime and strains social services. The best way to deal with it is to arrest dug intoxicated vagrants to prevent the crime and disease they spread then institutionalize them to dry out cold turkey…when they are clean put them on a bus to Montreal…..in that city I hear Lenny Cohen calls the propensity of drug addicts, hookers and pimps “culture”.
Well said Alan. Perhaps another causative factor is idleness. When life is ‘boring’ because there is nothing to do for the long 2 weeks between welfare cheques arriving, or you are conflicted about what to do when you wake up at noon, or if another trip to the mall to shop is so cliche, then chemical alternatives help to pass the time.
