Another bomb exploded in Yala on Friday, injuring four Shinawatra has been granted sweeping new powers to deal with attacks by suspected Muslim militants in the country’s south.
The new measures allow him to order the detention of suspects for seven days, censor newspapers and tap phones.
The Thai Cabinet agreed to issue the powerful decree after a series of co-ordinated attacks in the southern city of Yala on Thursday night.
More than 800 people have died in the southern unrest since January 2004.
The emergency powers, which Mr Thaksin was granted without judicial approval, replace the existing martial law.
As the cabinet meeting ended, another bomb went off behind a hospital where many of the injured from the previous night’s attacks were being treated.

It’s almost as if the Islamic extremists in Thailand are begging the Thai government to wipe out their fellow Muslims. For four percent of the population to try to assert their preeminance over everyone else by murdering non-Muslims seems like cultural suicide.
The future is not looking too bright for Islamists in Thailand.
Things will only change when Muslims take on their own, in the interest of their own survival.

What a great story! I had never heard it but, I love it.
Wretchard’s idea about “resistance cells” is the best and most creative that I have heard in the entire span of the GWOT. How do we help implement this? Does it take money? How do we encourage the propagation of these cells from here? In other words, what can one, sitting comfortably in the U.S., do to make this work?

First we should convince people that counterorganizing within Islamic communities is an idea which is at least worth thinking about. And why not? Radical Islam has planted thousands of cells within the West. Shall we not return the favor?
And if the concept is really a good one, there will be no shortage of guys who can think up ways to carry it out. First the idea, then the deed.
