Premier Lorne Castro

Hey, you leftie readers, always blathering about “right-wing” police states – get a load of this bone the Calvert NDP government is throwing their labour masters. To appease them for backing away from the promised part-time “hours of work” legislation (that would have, in effect, unionized non-union businesses) the Saskatchewan government plans changing the Trade Union Act to expand the authorities of the Labour Relations Board beyond that of law enforcement.
The NDP is planning to empower labour board officials with the right to enter a home or business and seize property without a warrant.
We call it “Calvert’s Cuba” for a reason.

  1. I wonder how long it will be before one of these smoker arresting, record seizing provincial Gestapo will find themselves face to face with a registered shotgun.

  2. National Socialism:
    A “Party” cadre/commissar in every farm/home/business/school/university/website/newspaper/magazine/day nursery/mine/shop/bedroom/playpen.. & etc.
    Far fetched… a rant…nonsense.. blather..fear-mongering???
Where is the evidence? Start by searching the internet: Hint enter “National Socialism”.
Just came back to this page .. about 15 seconds of search on you-know-where: For the words”National Socialism” = 233,000 pages alone.
    Down with “National Socialism”.
    Long live freedom and democracy.

  3. The proposed changes in part time labour regulations probably mean that Wal-Mart will depart/avoid Sask because their business model will fail. This will result in job loss. With less competition, prices will increase, which is regressive. But the trade union leaders and politicians will be just fine, thank you.

  4. Here’s another tidbit that the Bill will introduce: “ the power to require any person, trade union or employer to post and keep posted in a place determined by the Board, or to send by any means that It determines, any notice that the Board considers necessary to bring to the attention of any employee;”
Rather sweeping and open ended isn’t it?

  5. Well seems like Calvert is going after those damm Kulaks as part of their 5 year plan to collectivize the farms.

  6. Wow, am I ever proud to live in saskatchewan! This will bring tons of business here!

  7. Under the Firearms Act, police already are allowed to enter homes without a warrent. Furthermore, the home owner must assist them in the search or risk a $2000 fine. Lorne Castro… how about Prime Minister Mou

  8. Is there a URL for the proposed bill available online somewhere? This is not shades of the police state, it is the police state.
On another matter, how about Mr. Dosanjh skipping about the country telling the provinces to uphold the Canada Health Act or else. Hello! how about the Government of Canada obeying a few laws themselves first.

  9. I wish I could laugh, but the thought process behind such an idea is truly scary. What possesses someone in a (supposedly democratic) governing body to not only propose but think of such a thing?
The other day I saw on television a “come (back) to Saskatchewan, please” advertisement. It should have a disclaimer attached…

  10. Sask has a divided legislature, I think there is only a one seat difference between Premier L.calstro and the Conservative (Sask Party). The Sask party has an obligation to bring down the government at the first oppertunity. Lets hope a plan is in the works.

  11. The Labour minister was on John Gormley this morning. There’s more to the amendments – they plan on putting a 90 day limit for negotiations on new contracts, after which the parties (read the new union) can petition the Labour Board for a forced settlement.

  12. (There was no link available when I wrote the post this morning – I’ll post one if I run across it).

  13. Hmmm… it does sound dumb to me. But you forgot to mention that the NDP is also planning to empower the labour board the right to enter a trade union building and seize property without a warrant.

  14. Todd, yes, the ammendments include the right of search and seizure of trade union establishments, but the ammendments specifically _exclude_ the right of search and seizure of _affliated in any way_ homes, business, or premise regardless of association in the case of trade unions.
That’s only reservered for evil private enterprise. After all, we wouldn’t want the LRB to break into the ministers office without a warrant, would we?
    Cheers,
    lance
