Bananada: Not Just Another Catchy Slogan

By way of a commentor and Damian Penny at the Shotgun, CTV News is confirming that the Paul Martin Liberal Party will shortly announce that the Twelve Year Program begun under Jean Chretien to transform Canada into a full fledged Banana Repubic is nearing completion;

The Conservatives won a battle Thursday in their effort to force a non- confidence vote against the Liberal minority government, but it appears they could yet lose the war.
Minutes after the Tories won the right to proceed with an amendment later this month calling on the government to resign, the Liberals said they will simply ignore the call.
By tradition, the government must step down if it loses a vote on a money bill, such as the federal budget, but it’s not clear if the Tory amendment falls under that category.
The Speaker of the House of Commons ruled Thursday that the amendment, to a finance committee bill, was in order. That appeared to clear the way for a vote on the matter in about two weeks.
The Tories hold that if they win the vote, it requires the government to resign and call an election.
Not so fast, said government House leader Tony Valeri. He said the Liberals will refuse to recognize the amendment as a confidence motion and keep governing.

I speculated that the reason the Liberals have methodically eroded the Canadian Armed Forces, was to prevent the last hope of Canadians to remove them from power by military coup.
And people thought I was joking.

  1. Maz2 – I used the word “revolutionary” to mean unprecedented, not to suggest that a political revolution leading to a change in form of government was going to happen.
I understand your strong feelings. But the Libranos aren’t conducting a coup. They’re doing what the Tories are doing – looking for small advantages in narrow interpretations of the House’s rules.
Parliamentary rule-massaging isn’t the problem with the Libranos. It’s not the little tricks they play in the House that make them so bad – it’s the criminal activity in secret, and the economy-killing taxation and regulation. Let’s focus on those things. The government will fall. There will be an election. Take a deep breath…

  2. Hmm. Andrew Coyne paints a very different picture from the one I have offered above. And he’s sigificantly smarter than me. Here’s the link:

Coyne seems really ticked about this – but it still looks to me like the Libranos just want to fall on the budget, not on a confidence motion.

  3. Patrick Brown’s words are soothing, sweet, and dangerous.
The Libranos are hoping, praying, counting on the citizens to remain passive, sheep; as they loot the treasury, the tax-base of Canada.
No amount of glossalia, speaking in tongues, will determine the fate of freedom and democracy in Canada.
The rebellion of 1837-1838 is playing again.
Canadians! Join with our compatriots in Quebec. Throw the Libranos out of office.
    Long live freedom and democracy.

  4. Kate: I agree that there is already enough evidence that Liberals should be deregistered. I think Gomery used the term “money laundering” – and got Jean Carle to agree with him in this characterization of Liberal activities – for a reason. Jean-Pierre Kingsley, are you listening?

  5. Mccartney, one key thing to note about our system in Canada is that there are no checks and balances. none. zero. that is why martin and his ilk can get away with what they are doing. there exists no mechanism to force them from power. Martin represents the executive and the legislative branches of govt. All power, all of it, resides in his office.
Candace: “Tom, the problem with that is … we’d be stuck for sure for another 3 years while Paul et al rob us blind.”
That would not be true if along with fixed election dates, we got two branches of govt that can exercise powers over each other. Legislative and executive. Then you have the possibility of impeachment of the exective, or dissolution of parliament by the executive.

“Ottawa spies on border greeting” by Customs officers. “Hello/bonjour” greeting mandatory or else…???
Communist dictators installed cadres/commissars in all government sites in Russia & elsewhere. Purpose? To control the masses.
Would the Libranos do this in Canada? Yes.
Read the link. draw your conclusion(s).
Such a sweet , harmless Librano government. Not.
Freedom and democracy is hanging in the balance in Canada.
    Down with National Socialism.
    Long live freedom and democracy.

  7. All polls are suspect if their methods are not clearly delineated, with sampling being a key factor. Those cute little ones on the MSM websites are obviously dependent on who visits the site and who is prepared to respond to the poll. For example, perhaps folks with more strongly held views are more likely to respond and as such, the results reflect the views of that group.
OK end of diatribe. Today’s poll in the Globe asks:
“Is the timing of a federal election — spring or summer, for example — a factor in getting you out to vote?”
84% of 8990 respondents said NO
So the Librano “the people don’t want a summer election” mantra depends on who you ask.

  8. From Andrew Coyne, April 5, 2005:
What this member of the public wants to hear is: Don’t trust us. You don’t have to. Here are the specific things we’ll do to ensure that you don’t have to trust us — because this kind of thing will be impossible.

Jason Kenney, from Art Willams’ link above:
“It’s not good enough for us to say ‘Throw the bums out, we’ll be better’,” Kenney said. “The only way that we could turn around committed cynics is through actions, not words.”
    Great minds …

  9. There are plenty of hunters, farmers, natives, trappers, shooters and ex
military and police who are armed and ready to ROCK.
We need nothing better than some selfleftous lieberal elitist to tell us all
we are now an official dictatorship to blockade parliament and take it by
    force.
Could you imagine the Rag Alcock bellowing tough guy act in front of some
    guys with guns.
    Me neither
Could you imagine anyone in our military heeding the call of the guvment to
    shoot into the crowd.
Heads on pikes, if that’s the way they want it to go down.
We are not the push over pussies that socialist eurotrash lefties have
    devolved into.
We are hard working angry taxed to the teeth law-abiding Canadians who can
fight and may be at the level of disgust to make us go medieval on their
    asses.
If we need a revolution in this nanny state to show nanna is actually our
    prison guard, so be it!
A bunch of unarmed Newfs (bless them) showed us the way just this week.
    Yours in the civil service.

  10. Angry posters at andrewcoyne.com!!!
Serious people with pent-up anger at the Libranos refusal to step down. Talk of camping out at Parliament Hill. Ottawa.
    Read for yourself.
    Down with National Socialism.
    Long live freedom and democracy.

  11. The governor general could rule to disband parliament.
Except that she’s a liberal stooge.
    But she should do it!

  12. I hope the Liberals don’t manufacture some incident that lets them tout some bogus reasoning to invoke the War Powers Act. It would inflame things more than a bit.

  13. There has been a lot of talk about insurrection on this site but one of you hit the nail on the head. Should the Lieberals refuse to step aside in a vote of non-confidence the people would have to make themselves heard. We would have to take a page out of the Ukrane handbook and protest en mass and for as long as it takes on parliament hill and in front of every single governement building.
We could even bring black armbands, flags and scarves to signify the death of our democracy.
    Long live the revolution! 🙂
