Katzman

Joe Katzman at Winds Of Change provides invaluable background for those readers not familiar with Canadian Liberal Party history, the Sponsorship scandal and Gomery Inquiry.

He also believes this is the first big test of the Canadian blogosphere - this episode having subverted their control over the trial and the timing of release of information. I tend to agree. We shall see. At any rate, I'll bet there were more than a few who were shaken at the sheer speed at which the information broke.

Yes, this is an important test of the Canadian blogosphere. The point is, does information that concerns the public, i.e., how its tax money is spent, belong to a private party - whether an individual or a political party?

Such information belongs to the public. I cannot think of any argument otherwise.

What the federal Liberal Party is doing, is trying to hide this public accountability of what it has done with our tax money, within the actions of one individual.

First- it tries to hide its collective actions- the actions of its ministers, collaborators, aides etc, within a claim of criminal wrong-doing by only three individuals. It makes this claim by suing them - which states quite openly that any wrongdoing was only done by these three.

Second, to maintain this facade, it has to keep the testimony of these three hidden. It does this with its request for a publication ban.

The agenda will be to maintain a publication ban such that the wrongdoing of the federal Liberals will be hidden. Then, an election, using 'safe' issues (Kyoto etc) to keep themselves in power for several years. Then, they will attempt to prevent the Gomery Report from both publication and from full reportage. They might ask for delays, due to the 'delays of the trials of the three Fall-Guys who are taking the blame for the Liberals'. They might ask for censorship of the Gomery Report 'lest it harm these three'.

They have two goals. Hide the corruption as long as possible and in the meantime, buy out the public - flinging money around to all and sundry. There's no need to come through with these promises. Then, call an election; Get a near majority gov't back, via another election - using the bribes of this largesse and irrelevant issues. And..wait for the public to forget.

If Harper doesn't take the initiative and call an election for corruption - it's over.

a bit of mess,to try and distance from a regime that seemed to be very dirty.but folks in canada haven"t a viable alternitive.

Why do you say that? The old Progressive Conservatives, burdened as they were with the Joe Clark and Mulroney factions, still conducted a vastly more competent and honest government than anything the Liberals can possibly hope to offer. The new Conservatives have dumped most of the Clarkite morons and Mulroneyite crooks. They are obvious equipped to provide sound, honest, capable government. Why do you not want that? What stake do you have in Liberal corruption?
